Unfriendly reminder that in America it’s reasonable to say an unarmed black kid deserved to be shot six times because he might have robbed a convenience store, but a white kid shouldn’t be kicked off the high school football team just because he violently raped a girl.

It perhaps should not be such a surprise to see more young women turn to the sex industry. Time after time students and graduates are told to “come back when you’re older and more experienced” when applying for jobs, so when faced with such repeated rejection is it surprising that women would turn their attention to one of the few industries that actually values youth? As the full scale of their debt is realized, many young women are beginning to see the sex industry as an easy way to take control of their finances.
What does this mean for the stigma attached to being a sex worker? The same stigma that, according to Marie, can be more damaging than the job itself? The recent case of college student Alysa Funke, who committed suicide after being taunted by her fellow students for appearing in a porn film, is something that’s strongly on Marie’s mind.
“Women working in the sex industry are considered immoral, worthless, shameless,” she says. “It’s not the same for men because it’s only women who are meant to be sexually submissive.”

I NEVER USE THIS WORD BUT THIS IS I C O N I C
A man in a stars-and-stripes t-shirt picks up burning tear gas canister, hurls it back at the militarized riot cops who just shot it at him, and all the while he never puts down his bag of chips.
This photograph captures the purest essence of America I’ve ever seen.
I hope everyone under siege in St. Louis finds safety tonight.
